It began in a small room at Balitikuri; it changed with time to transform as the NGO in Balitikuri into today's hope of communities and society. Despite all the difficulties it faced in its initial years, determination from the executive committee, diligent volunteers, and dedicated staff made it possible for the organization to march towards stability and success. Balitikuri Bikash Bhaban is a testimony of collective effort, innovation, and unrelenting efforts towards social betterment in the present day.
Resilience Journey
It was established in 1989. Most of the struggles were because of the deficiency of proper infrastructure and resources in it. However, due to persistence and the community approach, it was able to overcome all the hardships. And Balitikuri Bikash Bhaban still survives, grew, adopted the new needs, and thus continues to expand in doing that.
From its ground base of trust and collaborative rel
​ations, the organization kept some flagship programs that served the purpose while at the same time developing other programs targeting emerging challenges. Most have been driven by community members as well as beneficiaries to fashion and sustain its mission.
Focus Areas
1. Women Empowerment and Renewal
Balitikuri Bikash Bhaban has focused heavily on women empowerment. Its main program, Paddy Processing for Women, has indeed been a success in bringing out the rural families. Not only did it make the women financially independent but also strengthened the socio-economic framework of the countryside by providing sustainable livelihood opportunities. It has successfully operated for more than five years and is still evolving and providing benefits to thousands of families.

Balitikuri Bikash Bhaban aims to make an enabled and inclusive society where citizens from all walks of life, regardless of their social background, enjoy opportunities toward sustainable development, education, and a dignified living. The mission of Balitikuri Bikash Bhaban is for the empowerment of marginalized societies, especially women, with skill development, livelihood interventions, and socio-economic aid.

Objectives of the Organization

1. Community and Women Development Program
Inclusive development, which engages all sections of the community, with specific focus on gender equality.
Accessibility to resources, trainings, and support systems promoting economic, social, and cultural development.
Projects that bring self-sufficiency and lead by the community.

2. Health, Education, and Infrastructure Development in Slum and Rural Areas
Health: Medical camps, health education, and preventive care programs. Education shall be promoted through learning centers, scholarship provision, and literacy drives for children and adults. Basic infrastructure development in the form of sanitation facilities, clean water, and transportation in underserved areas to improve the standards of living.

3. Child Education
Every child in slums and rural areas shall have access to quality education so that every child goes to school.
Supplemental learning by after-school tutorials, access to learning material and skills training. Organizing rallies to invite parents and other members of society to understand why education is the only sure way of breaking the cycle of poverty. Removal of barriers to education: child labor and financial constraints through scholarship, sponsorship, and counseling.

4. Social Environment, Mutual Shipment, and Cooperation
Organize community events, workshops, and dialogue to develop community ties and shared responsibilities.

    along with providing a scope for business generation in case they are appropriately trained.

Balitikuri Bikash Bhaban works upon the purpose of attaining sustainable development in poor areas for women also. It undertakes the development process through small group basis wherein localized intervention, community participation, and optimum exploitation of resources occur in accordance with issues unique to that particular region.
Focus Regions to be Worked Upon
1.    Domjur Block
i. Active operations in the rural and semi-rural areas of Domjur Block, Howrah district, is another key factor. This area is economically vulnerable, having few infrastructures and limited accessibility to basic services such as health, education, and employment.
ii. This organization develops a feeling of cooperative mentality among local societies. It operates in group manners with the localities and, hence, aids in sharing ideas and mobilizing resources for achieving desired goals.
2. Wards Nos. 49 and 50 of the Howrah Municipal Corporation
i. Within this urban environment of Howrah, the organization is concentrating within wards numbers 49
    & 50 where people belonging are known to be economically poor.
ii. The challenges in the urban environment include slum-like environments, overcrowding, sanitation amenities,
    and structural learning and work.
These small wards of group activity aim at rallying the crowds together for organizing the residents by the use of local skill acquirement, education, health awareness, and self-reliance.

Small groups constitute the nucleus or focal points of the intervention action plan within the operating model. It allows the organization to fulfill the following:
i. Active Involvement: The group members actively contribute to decision-making processes such that programs
   meet the local needs.
ii. Pooling of Resources: The group allows for pooling of resources, skills, and knowledge for the common good.
iii. Building Capacities: Training and workshop sessions build capacities that can help members achieve economic
     and social empowerment.
iv. Sustainability: The small group model promotes self-sufficiency and interdependence therefore supports
     long-term development and minimizes dependency on external assistance.

i. Vocational training, for instance, paddy processing for women and other livelihood programs.

Balitikuri Bikash Bhaban operates on small but well-coordinated assets that enable it to carry its work in programs that aim directly at the community. In return, it invested in its physical structure and the operation one which proved resourceful for effective program implementation and delivery.
Physical Structure
Three-storied building
Training Hall: Such an important venue that carries a number of developmental skill trainings, and carrying out awareness besides conducting public meeting.
Residential Unit: The accommodation facility for trainers, participants, and volunteers in the event of training programs or long-stay engagements.
Office Space: The location for administration and management activities.
Store Room: A room that contains program materials, equipment, and essential supplies.
Library Room: This is a resource room holding books, journals, and other educational materials. It should be available to the community and for staff development.
Operational Equipment
Furniture:
Sufficient furniture with desks, chairs, tables, and storage units supporting administrative and training activities in the organization.
Computers:
Administrative computer systems, record keeping, and training programs should include basic computer literacy for the beneficiaries.
Tailoring Machines:
Utilize on vocational training programs on tailoring and garment-making mainly in Women's Empowerment.
Electrical Items:
 The electrical instruments needed to be installed in putting light, fans, and others such that the place become utility and conducive for the event.
Valuation of Assets
The assets of the organization are building and running machinery and are valued at Rs. 9 Lakhs.
Importance of Assets
Program Implementation: Most of the activities will be implemented in the building and equipment such as training programs, campaigns of awareness, among other administrative work.
Community Engagement: Much learning opportunity comes from the training hall and library, and thus leads to increased engagement by the community in the activity while capacity building.
Self-Controllability: Low costs are attached to owned assets. Such savings can be used for launching the program.
Sustainability: Serviced assets will be available to serve for the life cycle of the organizational initiatives and services.

Principal Target Population

Balitikuri Bikash Bhaban has always been an outreach organization that focuses its services on the most deprived and marginalized sections of the population. The organization designs all its activities to develop, empower, and advance people and groups who have been marginalized by socio-economic forces.
Major Target Groups
Scheduled Castes (SC)
Scheduled Castes Individuals and families suffer from discrimination in social life but suffer low incomes in rural and semi-urban areas.
Programs are formulated for this section to solve issues related to education, skill building, and employment opportunities.
Scheduled Tribes (ST)
Tribal people staying in villages, who do not even have the facility of health and education.
More stress on maintaining their identity but are included in the development programs.
Other Backward Classes (OBC):
Other Backward Classes people, with fewer resources and opportunities, with limited resource base.
Focus is mainly on training, education and economic empowerment for induction to mainstream development.
Deprived Groups
Economically weak sections of people not getting education, health and employment
The community based interventions are designed to break deprivation cycle
Women
Women's empowerment in all these sections is the main focus area. They are doubly deprived due to gender discriminations.
Specific programs include skill development, women rights advocacy, and initiatives to be financially independent.
Childrens
 This category includes the poor, deprived, and underprivileged sections along with a quality education, proper health care, and also a safe environment for child growth and development. Here, school dropouts and child labor, as well as malnutrition, measures are taken.

Staff Strengths of Balitikuri Bikash Bhaban 

The organizational structure is comprised of dedicated administrative workers, program-specific workers, as well as dedicated volunteers. That staff helps in running the organization smoothly and brings to reality the activities undertaken.

They are responsible for the day-to-day smooth functioning of the organization.

Workforce: 24-Total staff; including 4 administrative, 10 program, and 10 volunteers.
Role of All Together: This group ensures that the mission of the organization-the empowerment of marginalized communities-is implemented both through strategic planning and on-ground action in a very smooth way.
